• Tyres have a part to play in helping environment-friendly 'quiet' trucks meet the increasingly stringent noise regulations according to Austrian tyre manufacturer Semperit, which is working with vehicle companies to beat the 80dB(A) noise limit imposed by the Austrian government.
As the amount of noise from other sources, such as the driveline, decreases, then the proportion contributed by the tyres increases, typically from 5-10% to 12-25%. Thus, quieter tyres can have a significant effect in noise reduction.
Speaking at the Geneva Show, head of research and development Ernst Petraschek says drive axle tyres make the major contribution. While refinement of the tread pattern can lead to noise reductions., changes in construction and rubber compounds could be used in future.
Semperit also launched its new M270 drive-axle tyre, which is a block pattern tyre intended to give high wear and good grip for heavyweight, high-power tractors doing longdistance work.
