• The Mercedes-Benz SK 33 range of heavy trucks, which includes the 1733 and 2433, has won the Truck of the Year award. Long, 45,000km service intervals, an EPS gear change and good fuel economy from the new, lightweight vee six Daimler diesel engine swayed the judges in the 33 range's favour.
Daimler-Benz truck division boss Helmut Werner says the company's heavy vehicle production rate was upped by 25% during 1989 to 50,000 units, but this year he anticipates "frostier" prospects for the commercial vehicle market over six tonnes. He expects "problems" in the UK market during 1990 where MercedesBenz (UK) continues to grow towards its 20% market share target.
Co-operative development deals will flourish in the 1990s says Werner, because of the high cost of design.
