.QTRIKING figures in support of the 1,--7 Birmingham dipped headlamp campaign were given on Monday. These show that during the first 10 weeks of the experiment 57 per cent fewer people were killed at night on Birmingham roads than in the corresponding period last year. Other night-time comparisons during the 10 weeks in question show that pedestrian road deaths have been reduced by 53 per cent, the total of accidents by 11.6 per cent and the total of injuries by 6 per cent. The figures are all the more notable in view of the fact that all classes of road deaths during daylight hours increased by 66-6 per cent.

These statistics were given by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Alderman E. W. Horton, at a Press, conference at which he presented an Austin Mini Super de luxe donated by B.M.C. to the winner of a road safety competition held in connection with the dipped headlamp campaign. The winner was a 57-year-old Birmingham bus driver, Mr. Albert Hanson, who has driven for the Corporation since 1934.

In a telegram read out at the conference. Mr. John Hay, M.P., Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, stated that the experiment "is providing valuable information on a question which is of importance to the safety of all road users" and concluded with a hope that "all classes will support

the experiment by being careful to follow the advice to use dipped headlamps when driving after dark in Birmingham ".
