Plastics Panels

ANEW method of fixing plastics panels to metal body framing has been developed by Holmes (Preston), Ltd., Blackpool Road, Preston. '

Fibreglass plugs are inserted through holes in the framework and are secured on the inside by a strip of plastics cloth. The plugs are spaced at 4-in. or 6-in, intervals, and when they are set, the panels are securely fastened to the framework.

This system has been used in the r27

construction of a new bread delivery van for W. J. Brookes, Ltd. The body is mounted on a Karrier Bantam chassis and consists of Fibreglass panels carried on alloy framework.

Colour-impregnated resin has been used for the panels. The roof is of translucent plastics, giving a high degree of natural lighting.

The body is divided into two compartments. At the front is a small enclosure for confectionery, in which 10., loaves can also be accommodated.

The total capacity of the van is 1,620 2-111. loaves, most of which are carried in the main compartment. This is divided longitudinally into three sections by framework carrying runners on which 90 bread trays can be accommodated-29 in each of the outer bays and 32 in the centre.

At the rear there is a split tailboard, each half of which has a step mounted on the inner side for use when the tailboard is lowered. Above is a one-piece door hinged along its upper edge, which forms a canopy when it is held open by two spring-loaded struts. One of the reasons why W. J. Brookes, Ltd., have gone over to plastics is that they have found that aluminiumpanelled vehicles soon become shabby because of the dents and scratches they receive in their daily work.
