Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW carburetter, which embodies a governor, has just been placed on the market by Solex, Ltd., 223-231, Marylebone Road, London, N.W.1. It is a development Of the Thermostarter Solex, and is known as the GovernorThermostarter. Solex ; it was briefly referred to in this paper in our report of the recent Scottish Show.

A feature of the design is its extreme simplicity. The accompanying sectional view illustrates the principle of operation. The connection from the accelerator pedal or throttle lever operates only to close the throttle valve. The ordinary motion of opening the throttle, that is to say, depressing the accelerato'r pedal. or moving the throttle lever in

the appropriate direction, merely leaves the throttle free to open, which it does in the normal way under the influence of the spring shown.

The wings of the valve itself are unequal, that on thp right (as drawn) being longer than that on the left. As engine speed increases, and with it the flow of air past the valve, the tendency is to close the throttle owing to the drag of the air on the longer wing. This is resisted by the spring, by adjusting which the engine speed at which the governor action commences can be predetermined.

The method of adjusting the strength of the swing is of interest. The outer end (away from the throttle valve) centres in a spring-regulating sleeve. This contains a steel pin passing diametrically through a coil of the

spring. By rotating the regulating sleeve, the pin is caused to travel to or fro along the spring, bringing a greater or lesser number of coils into action, and thus weakening or strengthening the spring and its tendency to open the valve against the pull of the air. Further adjustment is afforded by the spring tensioning screw, fmanipulation of which modifies the tension on that part of the spring which is in use. A cover is provided for the adjusting mechanism, and this cover is held by screws which can be sealed.

This new Solex carburetter can be substituted for an earlier model with modification to the induction-pipe and with little or no alteration to the existing controls. It should be appreciated that there is practically no additional mechanism involved and therefore maintenance is not complicated.
