Mr Ives told his audience: "British operators pay less for Dafs, Scanias and other makes of commercial vehicle than their European counterparts.
Mr Ives said that there are positive signs that the economy is moving upward. He estimated there was a nine per cent improvement which would lead to an increase in demand for transport. The improvement had been apparent over the last three months, he said.
Mr Ives, who has persistently called for down-licensing since the introduction of the 38-tonne legislation, believes it may happen in next month's Budget.
