At the opposite end of the scale to the darkness of G TAVice City is the animated adventure that is The Simpsons: Hit & Run . Again, this brand new game is not specifically a driving game but one that features a huge amount of behindthe-wheel action and, also like GTA Vice City, the number and type of vehicles you can drive is impressive.
You play as various members of the Simpsons family as well as other wellknown characters from the show and your role is to solve a mystery: what lies behind the swarm of giant mechanical wasps that has descended upon Springfield... and why are there so many black surveillance vans continually photographing its citizens? Taking turns as the different characters you work your way through various levels and missions to unravel the truth. Story missions include getting Lisa's homework to her at school before the deadline for her to hand it in; rushing around Springfield trying to get a blood transfusion for Grandpa Simpson: and chasing Cletus to stop him selling roadkill for Krusty Burgers. They all involve driving, often against the clock, and many require you to chase. damage or evade other vehicles.There are also a number of bonus races to be found that unlock new vehicles.
Driving in Springfield keeps the cartoon feel of the original.The roads are good fun, but there are also lots of rather more unconventional routes around with plenty of things to smash,jump through or otherwise wreck. If you really work at it, you can even wreck your own yehicle.but that ain't easy and by and large you can get away with some fairly bad smashes and still keep running. Wrenches hidden throughout the levels will repair any damage. hut hit too many objects or pedestrians and the cops will be dispatched to chase you.
In terms of the vehicles themselves you start off with the family saloon, but a range of four-wheel-drive vehicles, vans and small trucks are also to be found.There's even a fire engine in the game somewhere, though we didn't managed to unlock it in the time available. All the vehicles have different driving characteristics and can be selected at will, once you've accessed them.
There's also quite a lot of pedestrian action nipping in and out of places like Moe's bar or the Kwik-e-Mart.for example, and collecting special cards and gold coins that allow you to access extra challenges or to buy more vehicles. But driving is by far the largest element of the game.
With over 50 mayhem-filled missions and 40 vehicles to try out,voiceovers by the real-life cast and loads of genuinely funny one-liners within the engaging storyline, there's plenty to keep you interested in this game. All your favourite Simpsons characters are here; if you're any kind of fan you'll love being part of the Simpsons world. We certainly did.
