Let's get one thing straight, Grand Theft Auto Vice City is not a driving game, it's a crim sim. But driving is a huge element within it and the number and range of vehicles in GTA Vice City is probably greater than all the other games in this sample put together.
Published earlier this year, the story puts you in the unenviable position of having lost a large quantity of the mob's drugs and money.Your challenge is to wheel and deal your criminally-minded way up the Al Capone career path to make things right again.To do so, you need to work with Vice City's underworld, fulfilling their requests for 'help' with little 'problems' in missions that range from chauffeuring their molls around town via witness intimidations and drugs drops to full-blown assassinations.
To get to and from your various tasks you're going to need some transport. But there's no mucking about with bank loans in this game simply steal an unattended vehicle or hijack one, throw the driver out and speed off.
The vehicles on offer range from scooters and motorcycles by way of saloons, sports utility vehicles and sports cars up to vans and trucks.There are also a number of specialist vehicles including a golf cart (yes, really) and a tank. And if you get fed up with wheels there are boats, helicopters and aircraft to consider.
The driving itself isn't terribly demandingall the vehicles are automatic so all you've got to do is accelerate, brake and steerbut they all react differently in terms of acceleration and handling and you'll be kept plenty busy trying to avoid other vehicles and bullets while getting where you're going in one piece.
Too much reckless driving or law-breaking results in your wanted level rising on a scale from one to five. Get to two or more and the cops will chase you on sight. Further up the scale you'll encounter armoured cars, SWAT teams, plain clothes law enforcers and police helicopters. Cue some great chases and shootouts result.
There's certainly a lot of shooting to be done in this game. with as many different weapons to choose from as there are vehicles.
If you get bored (not very likely) you can just kick back and enjoy the virtual reality of Vice City.There's all sorts of mischief to get into mugging pedestrians, attacking the police, screaming round in the vehicle of your choice, or just listening to one of Vice City's numerous radio stations (artists include Michael Jackson,Jennifer Lopez. Cyndi Lauper, The Clash and Mary Chapin Carpenter, and there are also some extremely entertaining talk shows).
You can also assume a number of specialist driving roles such as cab driver, ambulance driver or vigilante police drive r.It's perhaps a slight shame from Comnrercial Motor's viewpoint that when you steal the 13inmaster' municipal you don't get an option to collect the trash in the local area, and that hijacking a van doesn't immediately lead to courier work, but hey, nothing's perfect.
GTA Vice City is an enormously engrossing game that offers more than most dedicated driving games can manage and a whole other set of challenges and entertainment on top. A word of caution though: there's plenty of violence and bad language in this adult-themed game which deserves its 18 certificate.
