DUBLIN PORT TUNNEL is still beset by arguments over its internal height, but its design has tied for an international award with the New York Twin Tower Recovery Effort.

They won the prestigious Flemming Award, presented by the British Geotechnical Association for "excellence in geotechnical design and construction". The tunnel was one of four projects to be shortlisted and invited to make presentations to the Institution of Civil Engineers in London. Others include the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Thames Tunnel Project and Ripple Road Bridge Project.

Irish Transport Minister Seamus Brennan TD has yet to act on a consultant's report which indi cated the tunnel's height restriction could be raised to 4.9m. It is currently set at 4.65m, ruling out 4.8m-high mega-trailers.

Dublin City Council is formulating a strategy on managing HGV traffic in the city centre after the Dublin Port Tunnel opens in 2005. One option is to restrict HGVs entering an area between the two surround ing canals during peak hou promote use of the tunnel.
