HERE'S TO THE UNSUNG HEROES

We agonised over the coverline for this week's issue... something about "not delivered by fairies" was kicked into touch for fear of upsetting more sensitive quarters of the truck driving fraternity. But, joking aside, there's a serious message to the general public on this week's front cover. We know it, and you know it, so forgive us if we engage in a bit of rhetoric this week but as the year draws to an end this country of ours has a lot to thank the road transport industry for Once again. for 365 days of the year, UK Road Transport Inc has performed an economic miracle serving the needs of the Great British public. As the nation tucks into its turkey et al next week is it too much to ask for a glass to be raised in appreciation? Of course not, though we doubt it will happen.

"As the year ends this country has a lot to thank the road transport industry for"

• Early signs would appear to suggest we should be giving the M6 Toll a cautious welcome, if the results of our test this week are anything to go by. We'll have a full report in the next issue of CM, so we don't want to give too much away now. But early signs are that the pay-as-you-go motorway, while not economically viable for trucks, does appear to be attracting a good many cars and relieving the congestion on the M6. Result!

• As you'll have grasped by now, this is our festive special issue and next week, what with it being Christmas and all, we're skipping an issue. Oh come on, you don't begrudge us a couple of days off do you? But we'll be back the following week with our New Year issue packed full of all the usual news and views from the road transport sector, plus a special start-of-the-year transport horoscope. To find out what's in your stars for 2004 check out the next issue of CM, which hits the streets on 30 December. Order your copy now... And in the meantime, have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas, from everyone on Commercial Motor
