Port Sally's £10nn plan

THE PORT SALLY Management's plan for a E10m development scheme to improve its position in the ro-ro market and boost local employment at Ramsgate, Kent has been outlined to the Thanet District Council The money will come from within the company, although shares will be offered to the local ratepayers.

First phase of the scheme would be the construction of a breakwater to safeguard the existing berth and the construction of a portable passenger walkway between the terminal and the berth.

Stage two, with the completion date set for the end of 1985, includes the reclamation of 35 acres of land; construction of further berths, four being the maximum; and the construction of a new passenger terminal and wharfage facilities.

When the development is complete there will be storage capability for 2,500 tons of cargo and landspace for 500 trailers.

The company claims that the scheme would not draw traffic away from Dover, but help cope with the "enormous increase in passenger and freight traffic in the years ahead," said Michael Kingshott, managing director of Sally Line.

The port will be able to handle more than 50 vessel movements a day.
