Applying for an extra vehicle before Sir William Hart, North-Western Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. J. R. West, of Dukinfield, explained that a large proportion of his work consisted of carrying what he knew as "carbon fuel" from Avonmouth and Scotland to Glossop. This was an extremely dirty, but valuable, substance from which precious metal was obtained, Mr. P. Kershaw, for the railways, said he was not sure whether his clients carded this "carbon fuel." "We do not recognize the name," he said, "but we have a commodity which answers the description," Permission to acquire a vehicle not exceeding 3 tons was granted.
