Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CM was launched in 1905; for our centenary year we're bringing you stories from years gone by. This week we're back in 1936 and 1986.

1936

Going for gold

Sport was big in 1936, centred on the controversial Berlin Olympics. British rower Jack Beresford's gold in the double sculls marked the fifth successive Games he had left with either gold or silver. Gold medals also went to Harold Whitlock in the 50km walk and to the men's 4x400m relay team.

Changing world

In the wider world, the Germans and Italians occupied the Rhineland and Ethiopia respectively. Standard Oil struck lucky in Saudi Arabia, while at home the Crystal Palace burnt down and King Edward VIII abdicated.

Streamlining The issue of making bodywork, especially on vans, more aerodynamic was raised in CM. The motivation was not, as you might expect, improved fuel consumption, but the image benefits of a modern-looking design.Among techniques discussed was the boxing in of the hind wheels.

Magistrates wooed A newly-wed Liverpool lorry driver persuaded Aberdare magistrates to change his penalty of a1.0 fine and a two-year driving ban for speeding to a £12 fine and no ban.

Employment C NI's editor gave a lecture at Wandsworth Technical Institute on careers in the road transport industry. Surprisingly,2.5 million workers were employed in transport and distribution, and half that number again were employed in the motor trade. 1986• Heavens above

For the most significant events of 1986, you had to look skywards. Halley's Comet made an appearance, while the Challenger space shuttle exploded soon after take-off. There were other nasties falling out of the sky, including American bombs over Tripoli, and Russian radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear power station over much of Europe. In sport,Alain Frost just pipped Nigel Mansell for the Fl World Championship, while in association football West Bromwich Albion was relegated from Division One.

High-tech parcels

In a sign of things to come, we looked at how a couple of road transport companies were making use of those new-fangled computers. ANC's parcels service was controlled by a Cado computer linked to 65 depots by Telecom Gold electronic i80,((X) machine boasted 60Mb of memory.

Overnight deliveries A feature on Network Overnight, a new express parcels operation, ran under the headline "Overnight success". Sounds like a great slogan for a freight network.

IRTE Display Remember the I RTE Display? The 1986 event may have been low key, held in the car park of Solihull's Civic Centre, but the content was top notch. Among the debutantes was the grand-daddy of today's commonplace automated transmissions, the Eaton SAMT, which was fitted to a MAN 16.331 tractor.
