The harder line being taken last year by LAs against operators becomes clear when looking at the 1,435 fewer applications granted as applied for. Applications turned down by the LAs rose by two thirds on the previous year and 20% more hauliers had their licences taken away last year than in 1992. A greater increase in revocations and overall disciplinary cases was recorded in the Western area than any other.
