Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LIGHTNING may have caused the breakdown of the Department of Transport dynamic weighbridge at Crick in Northamptonshire.

The weighbridge was calibrated for the day's work on August 8 and found to be out of true. Engineers said that the weight sensors were damaged and fused together. It seemed like lightning was to blame — but only because no other explanation could be found.

Frank Hill, clerk to the Eastern Traffic Area told CM that the cause is a puzzle as there have been storms before and there was no evidence of heavy rain or a surge of electricity. There was no question of sabotage he stressed.

The dynamic weighbridge at Crick — the DTp has about 45 — is expected to be back in operation next week. Until then the 120 lorries which are brought off the M1 to be checked each day, will pass without being checked.
