NATIONAL Freight consortium regrets that the Sealink consortium, in which it had a 20 per cent interest, failed in its attempt to buy Sealink from British Rail are qualified.
For one thing, the sale was bound up in a cat's cradle of strings that could not be satisfactorily unravelled. For another, the price reported to have been paid by Americanmanaged Sea Containers, of Bermuda was, in the NFC's estimation, well over the odds.
One must assume that the Bermuda company was satisfied with its deal and Sir Peter Thompson, chairman of the NFC, in what I like to think is a typically British sporting gesture, has wished it well.
