• A long-established Gateshead tipper operator engaged on quarry and other rough transport contracts, told the Northern deputy LA, Mr J. A. Baldwin, that the 20 prohibition notices issued on his company during the past few years (several of them immediate) had been "like a stab in the back to me".
Mr R. C. Peacock, director of Peacocks (Eighton Bank) Ltd, Gateshead, Co Durham, said his company ran 24 vehicles on a licence for 25. The fleet included 14 tippers from which all the GV9s had arisen. Because of heavy quarry work they daily carried 10 loads of 10 tons from Springwell Quarry. Mr Peacock said he was at his depot almost every day from 6.30 am to about 8 or 10 pm, but although the tippers were inspected every seven days he was still getting the GV9s.
Mr Baldwin reminded him that several of the tippers had very serious defects but as he was certain Mr Peacock was making every effort to ensure that this did not occur again he proposed only to reduce the licence to 24 vehicles, which was the number beiru run at the moment.
