The original MFC was launched for drawbar combinations that use an A-frame or dollies. To achieve instant coupling, MFC uses a male/ female coupling to interlock and a universal joint for articulation, with the controls fitted to the dashboard in the cab.

Gunnar Nyvaller, product marketing, said there was now sufficient interest to start developing the same system for centre axle trailers, a more common specification in the UK.

"The key part to developing it is how we fit the landing legs to the trailer and operate it from the cab. Do we use hydraulics or air? We must also see if the ball joint can cope with the vertical forces — some reinforcement may be required," he explained. "We [also] have to look at the fork and how it is attached to the chassis of the trailer." MFC has generated sales in Scandinavia, where A-frame drawbar combinations are more common, but operators want an MFC that can alternate between both the A-frame and centre axle trailers, he added.

Nyvaller said VBG will spend the first year doing dynamic tests before moving to field assessments, and that one UK company has said it wants to be involved with trials. He estimated that an MFC drawbar coupling for centre axle trailers could be available as early as 2015.
