• A 1.5m scheme to help hauliers improve their fuel efficiency has been launched as part of the government's plans to modernise road haulage.

Tens of thousands of operators in England will receive information packs expounding the benefits of fuel efficiency, followed by free seminars offering advice to drivers, owner-drivers and small to medium-sized firms.

Transport Minister John Spellar says: "We want to reach as many hauliers as possible to inform them about fuel efficiency. They will be able to cut their costs, and reduce the impact of their industry on the environment.' ' The seminars will be designed to help operators implement techniques and set realistic targets. There are also plans for seminars on more specialist topics such as alternative fuels and routeing software.

A spokesman for CSDF, one of the contractors responsible for the programme, says: "Our main focus will be to provide practical advice on how SMEs [small to medium enterprises] can improve fuel efficiency and create a fuel efficiency culture throughout the company. This will concentrate on technical issues arid driver training, with an inevitable spin off into some management and organisational areas. Seminars will be held on a regional basis, depending on demand."

The Road Haulage and Freight Transport Associations are disappointed that their bids to run the programme were unsuccessful, but RNA chief executive Roger King says: "We haven't come away empty-handed yet. There Is still other work for us to get involved with, like the modernisation of operators scheme (CM11-17 April)."
