'Help Britain's elite hauliers to Middle East'

FRED MULLEY, Minister for Transport, has been asked to investigate what advice or assistance his Ministry can give to bona fide British hauliers supplying the boom industries of the Middle East.
Mr John Phillips, chairman and managing director of Anglo Balkan Carriers (Forwarding) Ltd, in a letter to Mr Mulley makes the point that exporters to the Middle East need a fast and reliable service in order to take advantage of the current great opportunities.
But he warns that the possible mushroom growth of "cutprice cowboy carriers" will do nothing to solve our firms' cash-flow problems, or towards offering a dependable service.
"I sincerely believe," he says, " as do many of our international competitors that we in Britain have an ' elite corps' of drivers and hauliers who, to gether, can provide a professional service second to none."
Mr Phillips says that the Middle East is one of the few areas where there remains a belief in Britain's ability to produce the right goods, at the right price, at the right time.
But the present ocean and rail transport situation concerning these market growth countries had had snowball consequences of an almost paralysing effect upon alternative means of transport—by road and by air.
" Unfortunately," says Mr Phillips, " of late there has been a spate of abandoned British trailers and vehicles, where operators have either been acting in ignorance, or have endeavoured to beat the system of permit control, and the reputation of British hauliers in the Middle East is far from good."
