SHORT DURATION mini-tours to the Continent at off-peak holiday periods were noW becoming very popular as people obtained more leisure, the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners were told last week. Applications by Author Rowe & Sons (Cudworth) Ltd for express operation to Harwich for Denmark, and to Hull for Belgium and Holland were opposed by Sheffield United Tours Ltd and Wallace Arnold Tours Ltd.

Mr W, Richardson, traffic manager, said the company became aware last September of an offer by the Danish Shipping Line DSDF of facilities for mini-tours to Denmark from Harwich. Details were made available to private-hire clients with outstanding success, 12 coach-loads having been carried since October. Once the operations started a large number of individual inquiries were received.

Agreement had been reached with Wallace Arnold that operation to Denmark would be from October to May only, and not at Bank holidays.

The applications were supported by travel agents and public witnesses; the Rowe catchment area, including Barnsley, was said to contain around 316,000 people.

Attacking National Travel tactics, which, he suggested, were aimed at preventing small operators sharing in new traffic, Mr S. Walker, for Rowe, said Sheffield United was now making a limited offer of Danish mini-tours from Barnsley with some five departures this year. The offer was not made until three months after the Rowe application to the Commissioners.

Mr P. D. Green, development and licensing officer, National Travel (North East) Ltd, denied that the Barnsley operations were inspired by Rowe's application. National Travel had received a similar approach from DFDS last September but had not found any big demand. The first two departures from Barnsley were cancelled for lack of bookings. The chairman, Mr R. S. Thornton, said that the applicant was an existing operator in the Barnsley area and just as much entitled to share new traffic as Sheffield United. The application would be granted as amended with an allowance of two vehicles per departure.

The following day Sheffield United withdrew objections to the mini-tours to Belgium and Holland, using facilities pro vided by North Sea Ferries from Hull, after agreement was reached that no tour would last more than three days.

Wallace Arnold maintained its objection, submitting that a grant would affect its own tours from Sheffield via Barnsley. It was conceded, however, that as yet no winter minitours had been operated under this licence.

Granting these also Mr Thornton said the Commissioners felt Wallace Arnold had no prior claim to this new traffic.
