TWO CABS for new generation Mercedes trucks, which are not due to be announced in Britain until next month, are among the parts already stocked in the new parts centre which Mercedes-Benz officially opened last week at Hayes, Middlesex.
Five times larger than the previous facility at Slough, it has 220,000 sq ft of warehouse and office space and contains 50,000 line items ranging from complete van bodies to the smallest washer. An overnight van service supplies parts to dealers throughout the country; provided an order is received by 1 lam, stocked parts on normal supply can be with a dealer by breakfast time the following morning.
Parts movements are controlled by a third-generation computer and the quick identification of parts for customers is aided by visual display units linked to the computer and by microfiche display units for microfilmed parts lists.
Opening the new centre last week Mr Gerd W. Hoffman, managing director of MercedesBenz (UK) Ltd, revealed that the company intends to buy an increasing amount of British materials and components. He commented: "Britain is now highly competitive. Your quality is good and your prices are attractive."
