The following manufacturers have tendered for the supply of a motor fire engineto Southampton Leyland Motors, Ltd., £1015; John Morris and Sons. Ltd., £975; Merryweather and Sons, Ltd., £1095: Dennis Bros., Ltd., £1050;
Simonis and Co., Ltd., t1050; and Argylls, Ltd., £1070. A subcommittee has recommended the purchase of the Morris engine, subject to an inspection at Manchester. People at Eastbourne are growing more and more interested in the putting-into-service of the Leyland fire-engine which was ordered by the Corporation a few weeks ago.
Dublin is well on the way to have an entirely-motorized service, following the huge success achieved by its six-cylinder Leyland machine. The Waterworks Committee is now asking tenders for a second engine, and a copy of the specification may be had from Chief Officer Purcell.
Not One Failure in One Thousand Some of the American journals are publishing statistics with regard to the employment of the various .municipal motor fire-fighting plants. " The Motor Age " has collated a list of 17 townships, together with the total calls made in these places during the last two years. In all there were 3253 alarms, of which 3216 were an swered. Five engines failed to reach the fire out. of the whole total.
Progress at Oxford.
Chief Officer F. T. Symonds, of the Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade, will probably soon be able to add a motor fire-engine to the equipment of his brigade. The Corporation has made a grant of .C100 towards the provision of a motor, and it is believed that the University may be persuaded to give £350. We observe that in the discussions the references to motor equipment were made in the terms motor lorry," but we trust that a. turbine-engined petrol machine is indicated.
