ii he Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in Swansea no longer sends out plastic wallets with licences: the explanatory letter to applicants is a masterpiece.
"I am pleased to send you your new driving licence and hope you find the enclosed leaflet useful in explaining the new category system.
'We no longer send out plastic wallets with driving licences so please disregard page 4 which explains how you should fold the licence, this is no longer necessary... We have stopped sending out plastic wallets with full licences for three important reasons: 0 Firstly on grounds of cost. Although an individual wallet is not expensive we send out some five million each year which adds up to a considerable
SUM.
0 Secondly, because we have received many complaints about the wallet and in particular the need to fold the licence... 0 Thirdly, we are able to issue your licences more quickly. The plastic wallets had... reduced the efficiency of our despatch machinery.
However, we recognise that some drivers may still wish to obtain a plastic wallet in which to keep their licence and we would be pleased to send you one if you write to the above address. It would help us to deal with your request more quickly if you write 'Plastic Wallet' on the outside of your envelope..." Let no one say the DVLA does not employ some very fine comedy writers.
