Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Eaton is to launch a number of new gearboxes, axles and power take-offs before the end of the year.

As predicted (CM 30 May) a higher-capacity TS0 13612 version of the Twin Splitter gearbox will become available in 1988, designed for vehicles of up to 44-tonnes GCW with engine outputs up to 276kW (370hp) and a maximum torque of 1,815Nm (1,3381bft).

It complements the TS0 11612 series with its input rating of 1,560Nm (1,147Ibft) and will also be assembled at Eaton's St Nazaire plant in France.

Heavy-duty PTOs have been developed for the twin-splitter boxes to give improved flexibility for a variety of operations. There is a choice of two versions, each offering two ratios. The flange-driven PTOs have torque ratings of 240-250Nm (176-1841bft) for short duration and 200-280Nm (147-206Ibft) for continuous work.

They offer transmission ratios of 1:1 and 1:1.5, while units designed for direct pumping have 1:1.3 and 1:2 ratios. LI Eaton's latest five-and ninespeed synchromesh gearboxes will go into production early next year, joining the six-speed 4105/4106 units which began series production in April.

The new models are the 3105/3106 Series which are designed for truck engines of up to 140kW and 490Nm (3611bft) of torque, while the 5109/6109 boxes are rated at 685Nm (505Ibft) and 930N (6851bft) respectively. The 6109 is designed for engine outputs of up to 180kW in trucks rated for use at 32-tonnes GCW.

Eaton's eight-tonne 08.11 and 11-tonne 11.28 hypoid axles will also become available next year and will complement the jointly-developed and manufactured Eaton/MAN ninetonne 09.22 and 13-tonne 13.4.4 axle, for 44-tonne GCW operation.
