Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IT IS STRANGE that a trade union should have refused to help a lorry driver who was dismissed by Rank Hovis allegedly for falsifying a tachograph record, yet a workmate who took the trouble to master intricate industrial law and represent him secured him £7,500 compensation. Robert Richards lost his case before an industrial tribunal but his persistent advocate, David Philmore, a fellow driver, pressed on to appeal and won. The court decided that the chart had been wrongly inserted in the tachograph by accident and that Richards, who, incidentally, was £12,000 in debt, had been unfairly dismissed.

Philmore risked being dubbed a barrack-room lawyer, with the attendant stigma, but he showed himself to be a true "soldier's friend."
