AT THIS WEEK's Frankfurt Motor Show the new range of Mercedes-Benz medium-weight commercials for the 12-15 tonne range and a 22-tonner are being shown in public for the first time.
The main feature is the new turbocharged OM 362 LA 5.7litre six-cylinder engine with charge-air cooling. Based on the widely used OM 352 A power unit — of which over 170,000 have been built since 1964 — the engine develops 141kW (192bhp) at 2,600rpm. Maximum torque of 608Nm is produced at 1,60Orpm.
Transmissions for the new range include the first of a new series of gearboxes (G4), developed in-house, which will eventually be widened to cover higher engine outputs and torque ratings. The gearbox is the G 4/65-6/90, a six-speed synchromesh unit for a max.
