THE most impressive feature of the Accessory and Component Section at this year's Commercial Motor Show is the sheer diversity of the exhibits. From fans to temperature control units, from engines to retarders, from pistons to fork-lifts, the more than 150 stands will be almost a bazaar of commercial vehicle accessories.

What. may turn out to be the focal point of the whole section, however, is the new turbocharged TV8.640 diesel engine from Perkins Engines on stand 307. Exhibited for the first time in the UK at this Show, the 10.5 litre unit, rated at 188kW (250bhp), considerably extends Perkins power capabilities into the top end of the commercial vehicle market.

Altogether Perkins will be displaying 1 0 engines from its range of vehicle power units. As well as the new TV8.640, the company wilf exhibit the latest version from its four-cylinder in-line engine range — the-4.165 — and the six-cylinder 6.247.

Among other engine manufacturers at the ShoW, the newly named Detroit Diesel Allison International Europe — formerly General Motors — will be showing an example of its well tried 8V-71 power unit and three cutaway exhibits to show the construction of the Allison heavy-duty automatic transmissions. They will be on stand 282.

On stand 304, Gardner Engines will be exhibiting a 6LXB engine specifically modified to suit the Leyland B15 Dus, and a 13.93-litre 8LBX sight-cylinder in-line engine. They will also have other small exhibits of technical and historc interest.

On the Cummins stand, lumber 277, the centre-piece Nill be the widely used 14-litre 'HC 250 engine, and alongtide it the turbocharged NTCE 290 unit. Completing the 2ummins display will be the 3.3-litre V8.210, the engine :hat has been fitted in Ford's :ruiserweight and artic trucks, where it carries the Ford designation V8.504.

Another new product exhibited at the Commercial Vehicle ShOw is the Eaton Snapper 12-speed transmission from the Eaton Truck Components Group. To be shown on stand 306 the snapper transmission, according to the company, is a whole new concept. Neither a semi-automatic nor an automa tic transmission, it is a mechanical gear changer that shifts itself when it reaches synchronous speed in a driver selected gear.

The clutch is used only in conjunction with a counter shaft brake on starting, or if necessary, in traffic and on upgardes. According* to the company again, it is then possible to cruise in the top three speeds without the use of the clutch or the shift lever; only a selector button is needed.

This being, apparently, a good year for transmissions, the Turner Manufacturing Co Ltd will also be unveiling its new six-speed synchronized trans mission, the T6-400 series.

Based on the well known T5-400 series, the new selector allows an overdrive ratio to be added to the existing ratio sets of the 15-400. Five forward ratios are synchronised, the first speed being a constant mesh.

It can be seen on stand 314, along with examples of Turner's Spicer Angle Spring heavy-duty clutches, the Spicer SST-10-speed transmission, and a small exhibit from Earby Light Engineers, a division of Turner Manufacturing.

On stand 202, Brockhouse Transmissions Ltd will show its TCL 13CV Torque Converter and its TCL 1 7CV Torque Converter, The main feature of these two components is an electronically operated hydraulic clutch which locks up the converter, providing direct drive under pre-selected conditions.

The GKN group on stands 267-272 is going one better on its compmitors by providing demonstro‘ion rides in a Leyland bus fitted with the firm's SRM fully automatic transmission. Suitable for use with engines up to 350 hp, the SRM is built by Fiat in Italy and adapted by GKN Transmissions Ltd for the UK.

According to the company, the unit's built-in hydraulic retarder has reduced brake lining replacement by 40-50 per cent in tests, and reduced fuel consumption by 8 and 16 per cent over semi and fully automatic buses. The company will also be showing its range of accessories, including aluminium CV wheels, the Centaur tubeless truck wheels, and its new line of Kirkstall drive units and axles.

A newly developed vehicle retarder will be exhibited in public for the first time by Ferodo Ltd (stand number 179). Designed to absorb a significant proportion of the kinetic energy of a laden vehicle, the new Ferodo retarder is both smaller and weighs less than other retarders currently in use, and will consequently cause less drag.

In addition to the retarder, the company will be displaying its long established range of heavy-duty disc brake pads, as well as brake and clutch linings.

Another small retarder has been developed by Telma Retarder Ltd and will be shown on stand 221. The Telma CC, as it's called, is 35 per cent smaller than the company's C type retarder, a saving gained principally as a result of the improved ventilation in the design.

On stand 257, Lipe-Rollway has assembled a full size working model of its 14in twin-plate pull LP clutch, as well as demonstration models of other clutches from their line. Lipe clutches available range from 13-inch single-plate to 17-inch two-plate, and will cover all types of vehicles, including certain imported ones.

Frorri Rydewell Suspensions Ltd comes two new developments, both of which will be on display on stand 299. The first is a wide-spread tandem-axle bogie with, the company claims, much more roll-stiffness owing to trailing arms pivoted on wide cylandrical bonded-rubber bushes thai resist twisting.

The second development iE an extra-duty close-couplec tandem, with axles rubberjointed to an articulating bean. at each side. Each beam carries a pair of bonded-rubber sandwich springs giving extra resistance to roll.

More new suspensions are tc be shown on stand 212 b) Norde Suspensions Ltd. The first is the company's new Featherbed suspension, which, the company says, saves 30 per cent of the weight of other suspensions offered by Norde.

The firm's second new suspension system is the Brookland Series, a swing-arm suspension using the Norde solid rubber bolster, and giving a softer ride. It has, however, the same weight as that of a conventional spring.

A number of manufacturers will be exhibiting brake systems and brake component parts, with very little of it anything new. Among new product ranges, however, is a recently developed line of Top-Dog brake lining friction materials, designed to meet • the requirements of heavier, faster commercial vehicles. They will be shown on stand 258 by Trist, Draper Ltd, which will also be showing the rest of its line of products.

Intertruck, on stand 170, has come up with something new as well, a series of Susie air brake equipment. Other developments in the firm's other lines — including some technical modifications on existing products — are featured at the Show.

Bendix-Westinghouse Ltd Nill be exhibiting its well-proren Air Dryer on stand 286, a Jnit that is intended to increase :he life of a braking system by -emoving any contaminants. nd for the first time in the UK, he company will be exhibiting lydraulic Brake Actuation Equipment and Foundation 3rakes.

On stand 231, Yorkshire mperial Metals Ltd is to exhibit its Kunifer 10 corrosion resistant brake tubing, a product successfully introduced in 1973. Mintex Ltd, under the slogan "Mintex Service — we really mean it'' will be featuring its UK network of service depots as well as examples of its series of brake linings.

In its usual position on stand 303, Clayton Dewandre Co Ltd will demonstrate its air brake equipment, hydraulic braking equipment, and other products.

The main display will be three vehicle layouts: one for a heavy-duty lorry, a second for a mediumweight vehicle,, and a third showing systems suitable for operating a two pipeline drawbar trailer, SAB Brake Regulator Co Ltd will display the SAB slack adjuster on stand 293, as well as the range of Knorr Bremse GmbH products, manufacturers of automotive air brakes and Commercial vehicle disc brakes.

Exhaust Brake Sales & Services Ltd will be on stand 264 this year, showing its long-established line of retro exhaust brakes, as well as three new components, an electrically operated exhaust brake, an air fuel stop and an idle cut-out device.

A French company, SOMA Europe Transmissions, is to be on stand 312 with an exhibition of the firm's products. A series of Dana Spicer axles and SOMA axles are to be shown, including a set for 4x4 vehicles and a 26-ton doublereduction tandem axle.

The Primrose Group, on stand 162, has announced two new products that will be exhibited at the Show. The first is a half-ton capacity lightweight tail-lift suitable for the rear apertures of light vehicles. The second new product is a self-tracking axle that swings in an arc to follow a vehicle's steered path. This sort of axle has long been popular on the Continent, but this is its debut in the UK market.

Other exhibits from Primrose include a type-approved conversion of a four-wheeled truck into a twin-steer six-wheeler, and two traction aids, the Hi-lift and the Stop-spin.

On the Rubery Owen Group's stand number 163, the highlight will be cut-aways of chassis members with exhibits of clutch plates, wheel couplings and examples of the firm's pressed steel fabrications, heavy axle housings.

heavy press components and side members for heavy vehicles. Another Rubery Owen firm, Rubery Owen-Rockwell Ltd, will have its own display on stand 308. It will be showing its new cast wheel, designed for trailer axles and available in six-spoke form for both 20-inch and 24-inch rims. Other exhibits on the stand include the company's modified Super M. Series suspension units with a completely redesigned equalizer that provides increased brushing area.

The Sheepbridge Engineering Group's line — on stand 216 — has been been augmented by the introduction of Sheepbridge Precision Mar. keted Products., which includes Timing Chains, Speedometer Cables, Ignition Lead Sets, and Brake Pipes. Also on display will be a complete line of automotive components manufactured by Sheepbridge and available to the trade from Advance Motor Supplies Ltd.

For the first time in the company's history, Quinton Hazel! Ltd has taken a stand at the Commercial Motor Show. Exhibited on stands 190 and 191 will be examples of the firm's over 1500 replacement components for commercial vehicles, including kingpin sets, pumps, tie rod ends, and spring components.

A German firm, A. Ehrenreich & Cie, is to be on stand 310 with a display of its products, which range from hydraulic motors and universal joint shafts to radius arms and steering linkages.

Another foreign firm, this one American, will be on stand 300. Fleetguard Inc manufacturers starters, lube filter adaptors, separators and liquid pre-charge and coolant conditioners, examples of which will be on view during the show.

Cooper Filters, Britain's largest manufacturer of Heavy Duty Air Cleaners and Filters will be showing some of its product range on stand 220. For the first time they will be featuring the new line of filter elements for air, oil, fuel, and hydraulic applications.

Prominent on Hatcher Components Ltd stand 273 will be the company's new drag reducing devices aimed at cutting fuel costs. For tractive units hauling trailers the firm has developed the Streamliner, a cab-mounted unit that can incorporate an illuminated sign if needed, and for other trucks the company is distributing an American-made device called a Nose Cone, which, it claims, can reduce fuel costs by up to 20 per cent.

On stand 289, Robert Stockfis Ltd is scheduled to display its steel and alloy mudguards, as well as a new product, the Rubguard, made from galvanised steel and designed to protect a truck from minor bumps and scrapes.

Protective bumpers, manufactured by Wilmot Breeden Ltd, are to be shown on stand 192. The company is the main UK supplier of bumpers for both private cars and commercial vehicles, and they are manufactured in a variety of finishes.

Also on the stand will be small mechanisms — door latches, handles, locks, and window regulators — as well as engine cooling fans, all made by Wilmot Breeden, Georg Fischer AG, a Swiss-based engineering group, is to show its Trilex wheel system on stand 294. Developed in 1902, the Trilex wheel is composed of a hollow spoked hub to which a choice of rim types and sizes can be attached. In addition, other Fischer products are on display, including fifth wheels, landing legs, and spare wheel carriers.

More fifth-wheels will be exhibited on the Davis Magnet stand number 153. The range starts with a small coupling designed to be used with a 1-inch kingpin and with a gross trailer weight of 21/2 tons. At the top end of the scale is one designed for trailers with a gross weight of 89 tons.

The UK subsidiary of JostWerke GmbH of Germany has announced it will show two products on its stand number 249 which are new to the UK market. Seen for the first time anywhere will be the Jost E200 Landing Gear, a square tube construction with a lifting capacity of 24 tons and a carrying capacity of 50 tons.

The other new product is the JSK 36CV fifth-wheel, which uses solid rubber cushions between the chassis mounting feet and the fifth wheel table. A range of ccessories — repair benches and the recently introduced kingpin anti-thief device among them — can also be viewed.

Two other exhibitors will be displaying anti-theft devices. Waso Ltd, on stand 246, is to show its vehicle security systems based on printed circuit electronics as well as steering column locks. And the Ellis Security and Safety Equipment Co Ltd will show its line of products on stand 301, a line that.includes three special locks. to prevent the removal and theft of commercial vehicle wheels, semi-trailers and drawbar trailers.

Among refrigeration unit manufacturers, Petters Ltd has announced two new products that are to be shown on stand 281. Introduced at the Show will be a completely new Petter designed diesel powered system of temperature control units intended for use on trailers and semi-trailers. Known as the DH series, the unit on display will be a DHT50 powered by a Petter AC2 twin cylinder air cooled diesel engine.

Another new unit, the PDL50-T, is designed for transcontinental trailers and will provide temperature control for all sorts of cargoes, including fruit.

KL Automotive Products, on stand 166, will be exhibiting its range of heating and ventilating units. Although the units were originally designed for coaches and buses, they can be used in bans and lorries. The top-of-the-range unit from KL is a comprehensive automatic heating and ventilation kit which features two KL650 121/2 kilowatt heaters and a KL90 heater/demister at the front.

From Hubbard Engineering Co Ltd comes a line of truck refrigeration units in a variety of sizes. The smaller units — suitable for high and low temperature applications — can be driven from the crankshaft or power take-off of most vehicles.

For control of temperatures in refrigeratated vans, Lucas Kienzle Instruments Ltd, on stand 213, is marketing a new product called a T.S.E. Temperature Recorder. The device records the temperature in the refrigerated area, shows when the doors are open, and can show fluctuations in the temperature.

The company, which makes tachographs as well, will put itself right in the middle of that controversy with a special informative exhibit on the stand that will show the functions of the tacho. An expert from Germany Will be on hand to analyse and evaluate tachograph charts On stand 253, Dynair Ltd is to show their range of pneumatic thermo-fan drive systems for heavy goods and passenger service vehicles. The system, the company claims, is fail safe, and switches on automatically when the water temperature gets too hot.

A new design of shutter has been announced by Dover Roller Shutters Ltd and can be seen on its stand — number 200 — at the Show. Comprising a series of box section aluminium laths each with its own hinge and weather seal, it has been developed to meet the need of operators requiring a small weather-proof shutter. _ Two companies will be showing equipment designed

sport Engineering and Equipment Ltd will demonstrate its line of Kelbus equipment, as well as cab sliding windows, on stand 266; while Deans and Lightalloys Ltd is exhibiting their standard products — power operated bus doors among them — as well as a new Driver's Cab Safety Screen.

A light and sound show has been promised on the S.E.V.

Ii will be demonstrating its line oi auxiliary lamps, replacemeni headlamps, and special purpose lamps, as well as Marcha beacons, sirens and two-not( horns. The Marchal haloger rotating flashing beacon, th( company has said, is no available in either fixed or wha they call the "Kojak-type' detachable magnetic form.

Interior 'lighting is to bf displayed on the Smart anc Brown stand 296, wiff emphasis on transistorised bal lasts for battery operation o fluorescent tubes, and dimm able circuits for ambulance and coaches. Other displays wil include examples of the firm' bus lighting luminaires and o vehicle sign illumination.
