The first two motorbus proposals in the Tunbridge Wells appear to have come to nought. But a fast rickshaw service did start — presumably started by one of the retired Bi'itish "Raj" in the area. But in 1896 the Tunbridge Wells, Southborough and District Omnibus Company required seven buses, two charabancs and 25 horses from the appositely named Spittles and Mules.
Where have I been reading all this? In Buses and Bathchairs . . . But not a Tram in Sight (50p). It is one of three publications from the Omnibus Society. Another, Northern Independent Bus Operators (C1) was last published 11 years ago. It says there are now only 12 less independent stage operators of 58 in the area than there were then. And although several minibus services were tried unsuccessfully between 1959 and 1963, a dozen are now flourishing.
