IT'S COMMERCIAL Motor Show tome once again and more than 90,000 visitors are expected to pour through Earls Court to see the best that British and foreign truck manufacturers can offer.

The eight-day Show, which starts next Friday, September 24 and ends on October 2, will open from 9.30am to 7pm. Admission will be El throughout.

This will be the last of the current biennial Commercial Motor Shows at Earls Court.

The 1978 exhbition will be incorporated into the SMMT's new Motor Industry Exhibition to be held at the National Exhibition near Birmingham.

CM will be covering the Earls Court Show in force. Our psv man reports that a promising newcomer from Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd will be unveiled. It's a horizontal version of the Eagle 2220 automotive diesel engine (Stand 283). Designed specifically for both urban and inter-city bus duties, the new engine has a maximum rated output of 124.5kW (170 bhp) at 1,850 rpm.

Modifications to the engine include a re-designed flywheel casing to accommodate a compressor; dry sump; special mountings for underfloor fitting; and provision for coupling the engine to a fluid flywheel.

The appearance of the new engine at a time when interest in its similarly rated vertical counterpart is growing in psv circles is very significant and a spokesman told CM on Friday that the company was already supplying the horizontal version to the Springfield company in South Africa, and that Rolls-Royce was "examining the possibility of a large contract from overseas."

Our technical editor writes that the new Perkins V8 an open secret for some months now makes its "official" debut. Designated the V8.640 it will be available eventually in both turbocharged and naturally aspirated form.

Without a turbocharger the new engine, alreadu in production, gives (215bhp) at 2,600rpm from 10.5 litres (64C cuin). In turbocharged form it delivers 187kW (250bhp) Later a charge cooling system which will boost this to 216k IN (290bhp).

The new engine gives Perkins a unit suitable for the top-weight category.

I drove one of the turbocharged 250bhp 640s in e Scania 110 mobile test bed Iasi week. The axle ratio was or the high side which made to gear running on the Al a litt1( difficult. The V8 demands th( same driving as the 6.354 using a lot of revs. Fully lader to 32 tons the flexibility of thE Perkins was impressive oullirq away from around 1,400rpm ir eighth gear of the 10 speed bo< on the level.

It will be interesting to see i Perkins make any inroads int( the Cummins, Rolls-RoycE and Gardner market with thE bew engine.
