ADDING to the rapidly expanding MAN range in Britain is the new turbocharged 16.280ft truck, with a design gross weight of 44 tonnes (43.3 tons), intended for Middle East and long-distance operation.

The new 3.1m (10ft 2in) wheelbase vehicle uses the familiar twin-bunk MAN sleeper cab.

The engine is not merely a turbocharged version of the 16.232 power unit although it does share the same basic layout. Apart from the addition of a KKK turbocharger, the main difference is an increase in stroke from 150 to 160mm (5.90 to 6.30in).

The bore stays the same at 125mm .(4.92in) giving a new engine capacity of 11.41 litres (698cuin) compared with the 11.05 litres (674 cu in) of the naturally aspirated engine.

The power output of the new D2566 MTF engine is 209kW (280bhp) at 2.200 rpm with a maximum torque of 1030Nm (7601bft) occurring at 1,50Orpm.

As well as being a new model for the British market, the 280FT is making a sim ul taneous European debut appearing at both the Earls Court and Berlin commercial vehicle shows.

A ZF 5K110 constant-mesh gearbox is used which gives eight forward speeds plus a crawler. This is operated via the usual MAN steering-column gearchange.

A 420mm (16.5in) diameter clutch and a MAN hub-reduction axle complete the drive line specification. The ratios of gearbox are 13.1, 8.67, 6.37, 4.65, 3.43, 2.53, 1.86, 1.36 and 1,00 to 1 with a reverse of 16.2 to 1. A choice of axle ratios is offered at 4.64 and 5,22.

Mounted on 1200 x 22.5 tubeless tyres, the new man features dual-circuit full air service brakes, spring park brakes and an exhaust brake.

The kerb Weight of the MAN in its standard sleeper-cab form of 6.55 tonnes (6 tons 9cwt).
