Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AFTER TWO very difficult and unprofitable years DAF Trucks is now on the road to recovery.

This was the message of Mr Peter van Doorne, chairman of the company, when he announced the introduction of a new model, the Ft 2300 (see pages 65 and 66), in Eindhoven last week.

DAF was now operating at a profit, owing to expanding sales and fuller use of production capacity. The European market had picked up during 1976 and sales were now approaching a reasonable level.

Mr W. Lijmer, marketing and sales director, said that road transport operators are being faced everywhere in Europe with restrictions like hours regulations, permits and fiscal measures hampering growth.

But operators from outside Western Europe are not so restricted and are quick to profit from this situation.

"Business profitability is therefore a matter of ever greater concern to every operator," he said.

The attainment of the objectives of the EEC is proceeding at a very slow pace, Mr Lijmer went on, and the introduction of Community legislation is being hampered by national interests.

So far as Britain is concerned DAF sales figures at the moment are almost double those of 1975 and the company expects to sell more than 1,000 trucks in the UK this year.
