George Allott, class C winner, said: "This is my eighth contest and I have really enjoyed it."

And then the winner was. announced to them and George Allott became the 23rd Lorry Driver of the Year.

It only remained for the presentations to be made. Praise was heaped on the voluntary workers by Sir Dan Pettit, chairman of the National Freight Corporation, and Mr John Cruikshank, publishing director of Commercial Motor.

A huge cheer went up when the winner was announced to the crowd who had waited until 6.20.

Mrs Allott was overcome by the whole tiling. She rushes on to the stage to kiss her husband and then sat breathless at the side of the stage and said: "I nearly cried because I thought he hadn't won anything."

When it was all over George Allott said: "I feel bloody terrific."
