Bearings which will run satisfactorily without corrosion or lubrication problems, even when fully submerged in water, have been developed by Bearings (Non-Lube) Ltd. The inner and outer races of the bearings are moulded from Kematal, ICI's acetal copolymer, and the use of stainless-steel balls completes a combination which enables the bearings to be used partially or fully submerged in water or other fluids compatible with Kematal.
The advantage claimed for the new bearings, which are for low-load capacity usage, is that they need no grease or other lubricant. The bearings which range from 5mm to 75mm bore are said to have low inertia and to be quiet running. To meet requirements for bearings able to withstand heavier loading the manufacturers have designed roller bearings which also have races moulded from Kematal. Made by: Bearings (Non-Lube) Ltd, Walton, Boston Spa, Yorkshire.
Spray gun
The Metco 9E gun is the latest type of flame spray gun produced by Metco Ltd for applying coatings of aluminium or zinc in anti-corrosion treatment of iron and steel structures. It operates on almost any fuel gas with oxygen and compressed air which makes it suitable for hand operation and for site work. Non-loading nozzles and a thumb-operated stop /start control allow intermittent spraying so that no coating material is wasted while checking coating thickness or changing jobs.
Coatings of aluminium or zinc are used for the long-term protection of steel components or structures in industrial, rural or marine environments. The thickness (and therefore the protective life of the coating} is not limited, nor is the size of the component. Sprayed coatings can be chosen to give a corrosion-free life measured in decades with a minimum of maintenance. Metco claims that it is the cheapest long-term protective treatment. When repainting is necessary, preparation comprises a simple cleaning exercise in contrast to stripping down old paint and rust.
The 9E gun will also spray coatings of tin, babbitt or lead. It is said that sprayed babbitt has many advantages in the production of bearing shells over traditional pouring methods. The resultant bearing has a high bond strength and is free of air holes and contamination.

Sheets of material ranging from stainless steel to linoleum can be cut in a straight line or in a curved profile by a hand tool, known as the Supercut, that is produced by M. Mole and Son Ltd. The same blade is used for cutting any material, the maximum thickness depending on hardness. For example, the thickness of mild steel is 0.042in. while that of plastics laminate and hardboard is 0.66in. and 0.125in. respectively. All types of material can be cut apart from those that shatter easily, such as glass.
Precision die-cast in silicon aluminium alloy, the tool has a silver-coloured synthetic enamel finish. Hardened steel components are used in the mechanism. The blade is produced from tough nickel steel which is heat treated for long life and does not require resharpening.

Claimed to reduce strain on the driver when travelling at night and in misty conditions, a headlamp coating has been produced by the Granville Chemical Co Ltd that provides an amber light. It is known as Amberlight coating and can readily be applied to the lamp glass with a brush.
In addition to a bottle of coating each kit also contains a bottle of thinners to dilute the amber solution if it becomes too concentrated or to remove an unwanted existing coat. Made by: Granville Chemical Ltd, Keighley, Yorks.

To assist in this matter Grantham Rubber Machinery Co Ltd has introduced two pieces of equipment, a bead seater and a tyre inflator.
Both items have the same principle of operation, although the inflator is considered to be more sophisticated than the bead seater.
One bead is engaged on the bead seat and by rapidly opening and closing a valve, air is forced into the tyre in short bursts. Sudden influxes of air partially inflate the tyre and cause the bead to seat in the appropriate position.
The bead seater comes in four sizes and can handle tyres of bead sizes varying from 10in. to 24.5in.

The Nixon 17 Mk2 unit is castor-mounted, measures 30 by 18 by 24in. and without batteries has a recommended price of £198. Compressed-air can be fed via the test rig either from a workshop or from an air tank—an extra—fitted in the rig. I understand that as gas from a nitrogen bottle can be used via a reducer valve, the unit is quite portable—suitable for use, say, from a small pick-up van.
The rig houses various valves required for checking air test circuits; for both incorrect operation and for leaks. Three taps are provided for connection to the auxiliary emergency and service braking lines and four pressure gauges reading from 0-160lb psi are fitted.
For the electrical checks the rig has five tractive unit circuit warning lights, switches for
