Because the tests were laid out in a dog-leg arrangement, and as the competitors were continuously passing from test to test, it was difficult for the onlookers to compare the performances. But when it came to the turn of the last man—Norman Singer—most of the spectators were freely joining with a vociferous Scottish contingent in unrestrained applause for the cool, calm way in which this dark-haired, stocky, confidently competent Aberdonian moved from one astonishingly precise feat of judgment to the next.
