• Last Tuesday the RTITB announced that it is to discuss with the Department of Employment plans to extend its scheme for retraining unemployed persons as heavy goods vehicle drivers. The extension will take in a further 1000 unemployed men.
The decision follows the RTITB's policy of training unemployed persons to meet future demand. There are fears in some sectors of the industry that when the older drivers become due for a further medical examination that the failure rate will prove high.
When he opened the Gloucester Group Training Association on Tuesday Mr E. Tindall. director-general of the Road Transport Industry Training Board, said that the pilot scheme for training 100 unemployed drivers to hgv standard had rapidly been accepted by the industry. All of the drivers who have undergone training have now been placed within companies.
The Nottingham and District Haulage Group Training Association accepted the first of the unemployed trainees this week and he has already been placed with a future employer.
When a vacancy for an hey driver occurs in the Nottingham area the local employment exchange, the group training officer and the prospective employer co-operate in selecting an unemployed person who appears suitable for training.
