QPIROL spring pins—a development from the usual type of
pin fastening—are now being made in alloy steel by Spiro! Pins Ltd. Pins of I, in. and in. diameter are available from stock in this material with Minimum Double Shear value of 66,000 lb. Spirol pins are already made in chrome steel, nickel steel, and a nickel steel which is heat-, acidand corrosionresistant and non-magnetic. Many .applications in the automotive industry are claimed for these pins—for example, pinning shackle pins and gearbox selector forks.
Spirol pins are claimed to bc able to resist strains and stresses far in excess of those made in conventional designs. They are constructed on the principle of coil springs, so that the pin not only exerts constant outward pressure, but also absorbs, radially, pressure from any angle. This means that pressure that might cause a conventional pin to fracture will merely cause the.Spirol pin to contract.
The makers claim that a Spiro' pin will conform with any shape of hole—as the holes are compressed its contour flexes to assume the shape of the hole. These pins can be fitted to holes with plus or minus tolerances, so that holes can be drilled according to normal shop practices, saving the time and expense of precision drilling and reaming.
Three grades of pin are at present available: heavy duty, medium duty, and light duty. Diameters range from :h to in.
and lengths available from stock vary from in. to 6 in. depending on pin diameter.
