THE plan to switch to an all-single-deck bus fleet with flat fares and pre-purchased, token-operated ticket machines was approved in its entirety by Sunderland Town Council list week. An amendment by the Conservative minority on the Council that the system should be adopted for a trial period of seven months only, and that the charge for 10-journey tokens should be 3s. instead of 2s. 9d. was defeated. Date for the introduction of the flat fares is September 5 next year, when the first major switch from double-deck to 36 ft. one-man single-deckers will be made (The Commercial Motor, September 3).
With regard to the staff position, Cllr. J. W. Jamieson, chairman of the transport committee, told the Town Council that the committee had realized that their staff had every right to expect that conditions and wages would alter under the new scheme. Up to now they had had good negotiations with the operating staff and had reason to believe that goodwill would operate in the future. The staff recognized that only within a scheme like this could they hope to get a wage commensurate with those in industry, whilst the committee had given a guarantee that no staff would lose their jobs under the new scheme.
However, it is reported that when Sunderland Corporation bus crews met last week to hear details of pay and conditions offered, they expressed their dissatisfaction with the proposals put forward. Union officials are to hold further meetings with the transport manager and representatives of the Corporation to discuss the question further. It is understood the busmen have proposed that, under the new scheme, they should receive a wage increase of £4 10s. a week, whilst the Corporation has offered a rise of 30s. a week.
