THIS Atkinson tractive unit (below) built for Mr. Ci. A. Stamper, of Culeaith.

Penrith. is an experimental model with a second steering axle which is leading a busy life covering 3,850 miles a week between Appleby, Westmorland, and London. It hauls a Butterfield 4,800 gal. three-compartment milk tank and the outfit operates outwards at 32 tons gross and returns empty.

Built to Mr. Stamper's specification, the tractive unit has a 159 b.h.p. Gardner diesel (which is returning about 12-2 m.p.g. over a week's running) and has a wheelbase of II ft. 6 in., measured from front axle to rear axle centre. The overall length of the five-axle outfit is 39 ft. 7f in., the outer-axle spread is 32 ft. 2+ in, and the overall wheelbase is 30 ft. The king-pin is set 2 r1. 6 in, forward of the driving axle.

Milk is picked up each day from Appleby and delivered to the Express Dairy Co. at Cricklewood, three drivers being employed on the round trip of 559 miles. No motorways are used. the route from Appleby being by A66 to Scotch Corner and thence by Al, The tank takes about 30 min. to empty, and it is washed out at Cricklewood in readiness for the return trip to start within an hour of arrival.
