• return to work. As reported last week, the strike followed refusal by Midlands hauliers of local pay claims for £2 and €3 a week increases in basic rates. The strike started at Atlas Express Co, (Birmingham) Ltd., and had spread to half a dozen other concerns by the beginning of this week, threatening to affect BMC component supplies, among other vital industrial and commercial traffic.

On Thursday of last week the emergency sub-committee of the National Negotiating Committee for the Road Haulage Industry met at Brighton to consider the situation, at the request of the RHA. The meeting decided that the pay settlement of June 9 this year should be confirmed (involving. as it did, an agreement not to submit another wage application before January, 1966) and the sub-cornminee referred the Birmingham claim to the National Committee; it was decided that in the meantime the TGWU would do everything possible to obtain a resumption of work.
