ratings of 15 cwt. One will be a conventional chassis with metal-panelled body, and the other a 4 x 4 chassis for a 9-cwt. payload on cross-country work, and 15-cwt. payloads on normal service.

The power unit in both cases is a 60 b.h.p. overhead-valve petrol engine. In the case of the van chassis a fourspeed gearbox is fitted, and in the 4 x 4 the four-speed box is connected to the axles through a two-ratio transfer box.

In the Volkswagen 15-cwt. van to be exhibited the horizontally opposed fourcylindered air-cooled engine and transmission units are mounted at the rear. This model is notable for its double doors on the near side of the body.

To those operators who incline towards the three-wheeler an excellent example will be found in the 10-cwt. Reliant. The engine is a four-cylindered unit rated at 16 b.h.p.

Morris-Commercial will be represented by the LD1 1-tonner and the Jtype, 10 cwt. The former will have a new design of horizontal grille and in the latter, a larger engine cowl and easier entry for the driver will be two improved features.

For slightly heavier payloads, attention should be given to the Seddon 25

cwt. van, the Bedford 30 cwt. (which is to be shown with a Spurting body) and the Commer Superpoise 11-ton model. In the Morris-Commercial range there will be an example of the LD2 30-cwt. model, which will have a new front grille and inset headlamps.

There is almost as big a range from which to choose in the 2-3-ton class, but in this category the oil engine begins to appear. Such a unit is offered in Austin, Commer, Dodge, Thames. Morris-Commercial, Guy. Seddon and Dennis products, but whether or not to decide on an oil engine may be governed by the annual mileage to be covered.

Many operators may override this consideration, accepting the increased reliability of the unit in part dividend for the greater initial outlay.

The Karrier Bantam 2-tonner with Perkins P.4 oil engine is a further interesting vehicle in the 2-3-ton class. In the Bantam, municipal operators have an excellent chassis for a refuse collector. but it can also be used as the tractive unit of a tractor-trailer outfit, or to fake a mobile-shop body.

A new version of the Jen-Tug is to be shown. Powered by the new B.M.C. 2.2-litre four-cylindered oil engine, it has a payload rating of 3-3i tons. A

Scammell Scarab 3-ton mechanical horse, . set up to demonstrate the coupling gear, will be one of the Scammell exhibits.

Dennis will be represented in the 3-ton class with the Stork underfloor oil-engined chassis with Dennis van body. By reason of its low frame design, this chassis lends itself particularly to local delivery work, such as parcels carrying.

A new 4-tonner coming into the under-3-ton-unladen class is the Claymore with underfloor engine. The engine used is the Albion horizontal four-cylindered direct-injection unit. It has a four-speed synchroniesh gearbox and overhead-worm-driven rear axle.

Models in 5-8-ton Range Now we come to what is probably the most popular .class—the 5-8-ton range, in which, with few exceptions, the-oil -engine is the standard power The Albion Clydesdale range embraces models having payloads from just under 6 tons to 71 tons. Although no example will be shown on the stand, there will be one in the demonstration park. This model will be fitted with a new auxiliary overdrive gear. Operating on the epicyclic principle, it fits between the flywheel and the gearbox. It provides an -overdrive of 1.33 to I, and adds only 3i in. to the length of the engine.

All Atkinson models are powered by Gardner oil engines, that in Model L.644LW, of 7-8-ton payload rating, being the 4LW unit developing 75 b.h.p. at 1,700 r.p.m.

An interesting vehicle in this load range is the Jensen, which has a payload rating of 6 tons, with an unladen weight of under 3 tons. The Jensen concern is making increasing use of plastics for such components as body doors, grilles, roofs and so on.

The power unit in the Big Bedford is the Perkins R6. The chassis is rated as a 7-tonner and one of the models to be shown will be along-wheelbase version with platform body.. On the short-wheelbase tipper, another exhibit, shock absorbers will be fitted all round; this now being standard equipment on short-wheelbase 7-tonners.

Oil Engine in Commer One of the highlights of the Show will be the Commer. 7:tonner, which will be exhibited with the new Tsa oiL engine: When first' introduced, this engine was used only in the Avenger passenger chassis, the output rating then being 90 b.h.p. As fitted in the 7-ton chassis to be shown the unit has beeiruPrated to produce 1-05.U.h.p., with a torque of 270 lb.-ft.

• This.. opposed7piston, two-stroke oil engine is 'offered :as an alternative to the Cornmer.Petrol engine in-the 7-ton chassis, -.arid in all 'underfloor-engined 5-12-ton trucks.

An outsize in vans will be found in the. Foden FEG/74 -with Bonallack body. This vehicle is rated as a 71-tonner and is powered by the Foden c30) six-cylindered 126 b.h.p. two-stroke oil engine, which has proved so popular.

Designed for payloads of tq tons, a new vehicle using a Dennis engine, transmission and other units will be in the Show. The vehicle weight comes out at under 2! tons. The British Aluminium Co., Ltd., were responsible for the design and the vehicle was built by Mann Egerton and Co., ,Ltd.

When the new forward-control Leyland Comet was first announced, it was made only as a tipper, but an example with 13-ft. 7-in, wheelbase and a platform body will be shown. The whole range of Comet models is now offered for a gross vehicle -weight rating of 12 tons for home operation.

The Leyland 5.76-litre engine, fivespeed gearbox and Eaton 16500 twospeed axle are included in the specifica

tion. A point of interest will be found in the new Leyland-built cab. It is of all-metal double-skin construction with swivelling D windows, rubber suspension and foam-rubber seats upholstered in Vynide.

A new vehicle in the Guy range to be shown is a 71-ton version of the Guy Otter known as the Big. Otter. It has the Gardner 4LW 75 b.h.p: oil engine, five-speed gearbox and bevel-drive single-speed rear axle„ the ratio being 6.33 to 1. Another Guy exhibit will be. a four-wheeled 7-tonner, one of the new Goliath range of forward-control machines. Powered by a Gardner,5LW oil engine (94 b.h.p. output), it ilas five-speed gearbox and a double-reduction spiral-bevel and double-helical drive rear axle. For overseas operation, the gross vehicle weightcan be raised from 12 tons to 14 tons, an indication of the sturdy construction of the chassis.

A.E.C. are represented in the 8tonner. field with the -Mercury chassis, which will be shown as an 8-ft. 9-in.wheelbase tractor with fifth-wheel coupling. It has a forward-mounted A.E.C. 112 b.h.p. oil engine, a 14-in.diameter clutch, five-speed synchromesh gearbox and a single-speed spiral-bevel rear axle. A 16-ft 3-in.-wheelbase version of the Mercury, with a sir engine, will be shown on the Main stand, and a similar model wit. b.h.p. unit on the Crossley stand.

No great changes are foreshadc in the Austin or Thames 5-tonners same applying to the Dodge exhi with the exception that the sl hangers have been modified to r for easier maintenance.

The E.R.F. • Model 44G 1. wheelbasevehicle to be shown 8-ton payloads. It will have the K.V. cab, a feature of which is deep, curved windscreen in which 1 are no corner pillars. The clutc now operated hydraulically and Gi heavy-duty two-leading-shoe bi have been introduced.

An Octopus eight-wheeler and the new Super Hippo six-wheeler with blown engine will be two of the Leyland exhibits. In addition to these multi-wheelers there will be a Martian 6 x 6 cross-country tractor. Built to operate under the most difficult conditions, this vehicle will tow a trailer of 8 tons gross weight up gradients of 1 in 3: it employs the Leyland 150 b.h.p. oil engine.

Sentinel will be exhibiting two six-wheelers, one as a tanker vehicle and the other with a tipping alloy body. This make of vehicle has always adopted the underfloor-mounted engine, which, in the case of the models mentioned, is the Sentinel 80 b.h.p. direct-injection oil unit. A new version of the light,' heavy-duty six-wheeler will • be in the demonstration park.

Among the heaviest load carriers to be exhibited will be two Thornycroft Big Ben 6 x 4 vehicles. Of these, the Big Ben SMAIKRN6 represents a more robust version of the Big Ben SMCi KRN6, the respective maximum recommended gross laden weights of these two machines being 31.3 tons and 22.3 tons.

Power is supplied by a Thornycroft 11.3-litre oil engine developing 155 b.h.p. at 1,900 r.p.m., giving a maximum torque of 508 lb.-ft. at 1,000 r.p.m. An 18-in.-diameter clutch, a four-speed constant-mesh gearbox and a two-speed auxiliary box, and overhead-wormdrive bogie axles figure in the specification.

The new Thornycroft Nubian TFICR6/1 6 X 6 is a 12-ft. 3-in.-wheelbase version of the Nubian 4 x 4 and has a Thornycroft CR6/1 90 b.h.p. oil engine.

Unipower vehicles are specialized types, being mainly designed for forestry work. In addition to two 4 x 4 models, a new 6 x 6 is promised for the Show. This is a development c39 of the Unipower Junior chassis, with a Perkins P.6 oil engine. The transfer ease and torque divider are mounted between the bogie axles.
