THIS will be the first time that the 1 Commercial Motor Show, which opens at Earls Court on October 1, has preceded the private-car exhibition. Mr. J. C. Phillips, of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, said at a Press conference last week, that vehicle makers had asked for the Show date to be advanced because overseas visitors would prefer to miss November in this country.

Mr. R. Gresham Cooke, director of the S.M.M. and T., who presided at the meeting, said that this, the fourteenth exhibition in a biennial series that began in 1907, would, in terms of the number of exhibitors and the space occupied. be the largest and most representative of them all.

The number of makers in the vehicle section will be 47, and 450 different types of machine will be shown, the outstanding feature will be the ,high percentage of chassis designed for operation overseas, and many thousands of foreign buyers have been specially invited by the Society.

Special arrangements are being made for their reception, and season tickets, catalogues, interpreter service, offices. rest rooms, and other facilities, arz being made available to them without charge.

The Exhibition will be officially opened byEarl Mountbatten of Burma, K.G., on Friday, October 1, at noon. Thereafter it will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m: each day, including Saturdays, but excluding Sunday, October 3. Admission charges will be 2s. 6d, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Is. after 5 p.m.

Regarding catering arrangements, the following accommodation will be available:—South Restaurant, first mezzanine floor; grill room, basement; Alpine Tavern, basement; licensed buffets, six on the ground floor and six on the first floor; tea lounges and cocktail bar, first mezzanine floor, at Earls Court (Warwick Road), West Brompton (Richmond Road). and Philbeach entrances.

JULY OUTPUT MAINTAINS WEEKLY AVERAGE

DURING July (a four-week period), 1-/British manufacturers produced 13,435 commercial vehicles, compared with 17,839 in the five-week period of June. The weekly average over the two months-was stable.

Of July's ontput, 6,514 were for export and 6,921 for the home market. Production by classes was as follows:— Under 15 cwt., 5,145; 15 cwt. and under 6 tons, 6.850; 6 tons and Over, 392: motorbuses and trolleybuses, 763: battery-electrics, 285. Figures prepared by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that in the first seven months of the year, 97,687 commercial vehicles were manufactured (including four for the Services), of which 45,775 were allocated to overseas markets and 51,908 for home service. Vehicles under 15 cwt. numbered 33,959; 15 cwt. and under 6 tons, 50,187; 6 tons and over, 3,680; motorbuses and trolleybuses, 7,652, and battery-electrics, 2.209.
