ROADS minister Stephen Hammond has switched to rail at the Department for Transport after just over a year in his role, as part of prime minister David Cameron's ministerial reshuffle.
Hammond has been replaced by Conservative party whip Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby.
A former farmer, Goodwill was elected to parliament in 2005 and has spent 18 months on the Transport Select Committee during his time as an MP.
Goodwill's ministerial responsibilities — officially as parliamentary under secretary of state for transport — are broadly in line with those Hammond held in his previous role: namely, strategic roads and the Highways Agency; motoring agencies; road safety; and freight and logistics — including the HGV Road User Levy.
However, unlike Hammond, he also has local roads, aviation, H52 phase one and cycling to oversee.
