FOWLER-WELCH has put its first Euro-6 trucks on the road — five Volvo FH tractor units — to gain experience of the new technology ahead of the company's planned fleet replacement programme next year. The new trucks, supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials, will work out of the chilled, ambient and FMCG specialist's national DC in Heywood, Lancashire.
Nick Hay, MD at Fowler-Welch, said the company will be replacing 100 of its 400-strong fleet in December 2014, and it is important for the business to get to know and understand Euro-6 technology.
He added that the company recognises three controllable operational costs for the business: its drivers, its fleet and its fuel consumption, so driver training is essential to controlling costs. He said: "We are heavily focused on mpg together with reducing the environmental impact of the fleet. Early adoption of Euro-6 is an important step towards that."
