• Customs have swooped an a truck driver attempting to smuggle £3m worth of cocaine into the UK.

The Portugese driver was stopped by Portsmouth Customs officers as he arrived from Cherbourg on a P&L ferry last week. A detailed search of the vehicle revealed a stash of the class A drug, wrapped in newspaper and hidden among tuna fish cans. Officers estimate there were 33kg of cocaine on board.

The driver, 31-year-old Lllisses Carreira-Belo from Lisbon, was arrested and appeared at Portsmouth magistrates the following day where he pleaded not guilty. He was remanded in custody and was due back in court on 14 October_ A Customs spokesman says it is delighted at preventing such a large quantity of drugs from entering the UK.
