Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A Taunton owner-driver is calling for witnesses to help clear him of criminal and civil charges over an accident he says he did not cause.

Roger Coles is accused of driving without due care and attention, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident. He also faces a number of civil claims after a Land Rover Discovery swerved off the M5 behind him on 4 June.

Coles claimed he stopped and reported the accident to the police and that witnesses misinterpreted the fact that he pulled up on the hard shoulder as evidence that he was involved. The injured car owner claims Coles swerved into her car and is suing for injuries and for damage to the vehicle.

Coles wants witnesses to back his claim that a Stella Artois dray was overtaking him at the time of the accident and it could have been this vehicle that swerved into the middle lane, causing the accident.

Coles believes a witness could provide the final evidence in a case that he says is inconsistent.

The police say they have no record of Coles's emergency call, forcing him to request a copy of the tape made of all 999 calls. Nor have the police examined his new trailer, which Coles says is completely unmarked despite claims that the Discovery hit its rear wheels during the alleged incident.

Potential witnesses should contact Coles on 01823 251674.
