• Car transport firm Walon has wrested a three-year Toyota distribution contract for 50,000 vehicles a year from BRS. BRS had held the business for the past 13 years.
Toyota says the change of carrier was not through dissatisfaction with the NFC subsidiary. Several car transport companies had tendered for the work and Walon's offer was the best.
French-based Walon, which bought Abbey Hill in 1989, starts the contract on 1 January. The business will be increased in 1993 when Toyota opens a plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire. Walon will deliver all Toyotas coming into the UK through its import centre in Sheerness to 230 dealers nationwide.
The company, which has 130 trucks, plans to increase its fleet as a result of the Toyota deal. It also has contracts with Mitsubishi, Vauxhall and Honda.
Walon sales and marketing manager Tim Barber describes the.. deal as "very significant".
