Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Compactalign

A number of new items of equipment were recently demonstrated to the Press by Kismet Ltd., Fenlake Works, Fenlake Road, Bedford. These included a newly developed wheel and steering alignment gauge, the Compactalign, which uses mirror-reflected light beams and is suitable for up to 16in. diameter wheel rims: it provides a semi-automatic check. The unit offers optical wheel alignment in a sophisticated but easy-to-use form with the projectors mounted on selfcentring adapters clamped to the wheel rim. There are means for correcting any rim run-out and bubble gauges are included to ensure fore-and-aft and sideto-side level.

Direct readings are taken from a light image shown on scales built into the equipment for castor, camber, kingpin inclination and toe-in or toe-out. The equipment can be used on a

Projectalign

A second wheel and steering alignment device—a revised version of the well-proved Pro jecta lign—incl udes equipment which permits its use on all vehicles having wheel rims up to 20in. diameter. Wheel attachment magnets have been fitted to allow the equipment to be used on vehicle brake drums or hubs when alignment is being corrected with the wheels off. Scale spreader bars are included in the kit to enable the equipment to be checked and zero'd periodically. A brake pedal depressor for use with commercial vehicles is included in the kit.

Trackalign

For the workshop or small fleet operator unable to afford either of the sophisticated alignment sets. Kismet has introduced the Trackalign unit. This is a simple device utilizing wheel rim attachments and mirror-reflected image to check readings. The unit is powered by a pair of U2 batteries.

Rapid and accurate measurement of toe-in/toe-out geometry of all types of vehicles having wheel rim sizes of from 10 to 15in. diameter is possible. It

will track up to plus or minus A wall-mounting bracket is supplied with the unit for safe storage when not in use and the reflecting mirror is a standard Wingard commercial vehicle driving mirror.

Wheel alignment tester

A device for checking whether front-wheel alignment is seriously at fault is another new Kismet product. This unit features a pair of pads over which a vehicle is driven. A plate in the pads moves sideways due to the toe-in or toe-out of the wheels. If alignment is incorrect by an amount greater than a predetermined figure, a wall-mounted console produces a warning Signal by means of a buzzer and a light indicates in which direction the alignment is at fault.

A second wall-mounted device is designed to accept a punch card. Drivers of vehicles which have registered faulty alignment place the card in the machine and press an operating button. The card is punched to indicate the misalignment and forwarded to the workshop staff with the vehicle.

Brake tester

Much emphasis has beendirected towards roller test beds for testing vehicle braking efficiency since the introduction of the MoT testing stations. It is, however, often beyond the means of a small operator or garage to purchase the universally accepted twin-roller tester and Kismet has developed units in which single rollers are used.

The model available at present —HPA KBT 1300—is supplied singly or in multiples as required with a saving of some £320 where a single-roller unit is specified and this unit also saves space.

Although this equipment is being manufactured for light vehicles applying a maximum wheel weight of 1,0001b, Kismet envisages that should there be a future demand it will be feasible to produce single roller equipment for up to 7 tons wheel capacity. A unit of this size would be adequate for testing any commercial vehicle capable of operating in the UK or on the Continent.

The specification of the brake tester can vary according to requirements. It can be supplied as a bare two-roller unit and console containing the gauges, or with a pair of double-rollers with console and gauges, or in either of these forms but complete with wheel-slip indicators. Forecourt furnishings

To blend with the square units featured in modern petrol station forecourt design, Kismet has introduced a new air and water tower featuring a square-shaped gauge housing mounted on a square-section pillar. The face is calibrated in p.s.i. and k/m2 and will read up to 140 p.s.i. or 10 kgf/cm2. The dial measures 11.5in. diameter and the head will swivel through 90deg. As it is designed as a self-contained unit, the head is also available as a wall-mounted gauge. The Bourdon tube gauge is mounted directly behind the dial face.

Coiled nylon hose is used, that for the air service being 20ft in length while the water service line also included is 12ft. When pillar-mounted, the head swivels on a 3in, diameter steel tube and as flexible hoses are used to connect the supply lines to the head there are no glands to fail. The gauge face is internally illuminated.

Hot-water washer

Another introduction, the Champion hot-water washing machine, is mounted in an identical chassis to the Kismet steam cleaner. It utilizes the same heat-exchanger unit.

The machine will produce 120gal of hot water at 90deg C per hour at a pressure with the gun open of 380 p.s.i. A pressure relief valve allows the machine to continue to run when the gun is closed and at these times the pressure within the circuit rises to 500 p.s.i. When this pressure is reached a sensing switch causes the fuel supply to be cut off and the flame extinguished. When the gun valve is re-opened and the pressure drops the fuel supply and ignition is restored automatically.

The machine is supplied complete with a fuel storage tank and a detergent tank and is powered by a 1 hp 220/240 V single-phase a.c. motor. It runs on domestic paraffin, Price: £385

Mobile lifting table

To make the best use of a vehicle lift, operatives must be able to handle major units while beneath a vehicle supported on it. In re-introducing a mobile lifting table Kismet has fulfilled what is a desperate need in many workshops. This comprises a bogiemounted long-stroke hydraulic jack on the top of which is a robust metal table equipped with adjustable sliding wedge blocks. Beneath the table is a traversing screw permitting movement of the table for final alignment and entry, for instance, of gearbox spigot shafts into clutch and flywheel assemblies. A second screw permits the table to be tilted up to 15deg from the horizontal.

The equipment gives a total lift range of 36in. and will support 1,000Ib. It has a minimum height when closed of 44.5in.

Dual-brake shoe grinder

From Stopwell Brake Services comes .a brake shoe grinder which can grind two shoes simultaneously—the only machine in the world which can do this, it is claimed.

Electrically actuated, it has a grinding roller which is fixed vertically and revolves in a clockwise direction. Apart from being positioned horizontally, the brake shoes are fitted on a turntable in the same relation as they would be in the brake drum. Each of the shoes is bolted at one end and separated at the other by a metal collar. The turntable is revolved by hand.

Located on a sliding platform which can be adjusted by turning a handle, the turntable brings the linings into contact with the grinding roller. The required radius of the linings is set on a gauge so that when the linings, still fixed on the turntable, just pass through the gauge the liner dimensions are matched to the required circumference.

Stopwell emphasizes that it uses the new machine in conjunction with a Van Norman brake drum lathe. This machine grinds the inside of the drum until it is smooth and ensures that the drum is revolving without distortion. The Stopwell brake shoe grinder is most effective when these two factors are correct, as oversize brake linings are ground down accurately to fit the newly ground brake drum. The grinder sells at approximately £560.

Stopwell also provides a drum and shoe grinding service. For turning and grinding the brake drums, Stopwell charges £3 lOs for those under 5in., £4 for 5in. to 6in., £4 10s for 6in. and £5 for the Rubery Owen 7in. The cost of radiusing a liner is 1 Os per shoe /liner.

Tail lift

The General Purpose Mk.II hydraulic tail lift announced by Hipope is supplied with power take-off/pump unit or electro hydraulic pump unit and all necessary fittings as standard including fixed internal and external switches or rod control for the pto. A 3ft deep three-way cantilever tailboard with torsionbar-assisted closure is standard. The tail lift is manufactured in two standard widths giving a 6ft or 6ft 4in. working platform and matches normal overall body widths. Special widths can be manufactured.

With a pto-operated tailgate the control is fitted next to the platform and is manually operated. With electro-hydraulic power, switches can be fixed internally and externally and points can be fixed to allow the use of a trailing hand set. The tail lift can be fitted either to a rigid or articulated vehicle. In the latter case where the power is taken from the prime mover, all plugs, sockets and wiring or piping are provided and an extra charge made.

The standard General Purpose tail lift will lift up to 52in. and extras available include 6in. or 9in. leading edge, additional platform depth up to a total of 4ft, hinged leading edge/pallet stop, detachable side ramps, detachable side or front stop rails, platform cladding, trailing hand set and provision for 24V operation.

CP catalogue

Now available—the fourth edition of the Consolidated Pneumatic catalogue number 61, which describes its range of air tools for the motor industry and garage trade. The 20-page catalogue gives details of tools ranging from the iin. square drive impact wrench to the 1 in. heavy commercial impact wrench. It shows also a full range of pneumatic hammers for body repair work, heavy cutting operations and crash rescue.

Spring brake maintenance

A broad sheet has recently been issued by Westinghouse CVB which covers the repair and servicing of the company's spring-brake actuators. It is designed for attachment to a workshop or garage wall.

Emergency windscreen

All Transit-Deansgate minicoaches (Williams Motor Co. (Sales) Ltd., Trafford Street, Manchester 3) are to be equipped with Compact Mk.II emergency windscreens without extra cost. A product of Humphrey Thompson Enterprizes, the Compact Mk.II is a boxed temporary screen which, in case of breakage of the original glass, enables the vehicle to continue its journey in a matter of 10 minutes. Fitting is simple to perform and when the Compact is in place washers, wipers, heaters and demisters operate effectively. Log grab

A new log grab capable of lifting timbers of from 4in. to 30in. diameter has been developed by Bomford and Evershed. It is designed as an attachment for the Sapper-Bomford loader as fitted to Ford County 654 and 754 tractors.

Main feature of the grab is that the tines -meshwith each other thus preventing any material losses and giving more power to the "'bite-. Attachment is by three pins to the loader booms and crowd ram. An extra control valve unit and hydraulic piping is supplied for operating the independent action clamp-arm ram.

Maximum lifting capacity to the full discharge height of 10ft 4in. is 2,800lb with a tip angle of approximately 40deg. Tip angle at ground level is about 105deg and roll-back at ground level around 10deg.

Metric combination spanners

A range of metric combination spanners has been introduced by Tipco Tools, following the successful launching of a range of metric open-ended spanners. Location maps A set of location maps showing repair and service facilities for vehicles with Cummins engines is included in a booklet called the "Cummins Operator Guide-.

The booklet contains names and addresses of the 30 Cummins service centres listed and includes a map of approach roads. Telephone and telex numbers, working hours and availability of a 24-hr breakdown or emergency service are also shown. Space is given to engine warranty provisions, the Cummins engine inspection scheme, service training available and to a chart showing details of the more important parts of the engine.

Cummins asks operators to mark the engine model, engine serial number and engine application on the inside front cover of the booklet in the space provided so that the details are immediately available in emergencies. Refrigeration lubbard Engineering has innounced an all-electric re'rigeration unit, the 1100, designed for large truck and trailer bodies, which is capable pf maintaining temperatures down to '20deg F. The refrigeration section of the unit is mounted on the bulkhead of the insulated body on the outside and passes through an aperture, while the power section, which generates three-phase electricity, is underslung from the chassis frame.

Features of the unit include an electric semi-hermetic compressor, electric fans and an electric defrost system which eliminates mechanical drive by belts, pulleys, clutches and so on and provides for location remote from the engine. Most of the maintenance required is to the engine of the power section, which slides clear of the body for easy access at ground level. The power section can be mounted in the position most favourable for weight distribution and axle loading.

Any required temperature can be thermostatically maintained by the Hubbard 1100, and the unit will automatically heat or cool as required_ Capacities of 12,000 B.Th.U/h. at Odeg F and 6,500 B.Th.U/h. at —20deg F have been measured at an ambient temperature of 80deg F. The equipment is, therefore. very suitable for bulk transport of frozen foods and ice cream.

Electric power for the refrigeration section is generated by a 6-kW alternator, or can be provided from mains electric supply when the vehicle is stationary. The alternator is driven by a twin-cylinder petrol or LPG (propane) engine and a diesel-operated alternator will later be offered as an option. Made by: Hubbard Engineering Co. Nylon sheeting

Winterbottom Products have improved and extended their Topspan range of PVC-coated nylon sheeting materials with the introduction of Topspan TIR and Topspan Two.

Topspan TIR is suitable for ocean-going freight container tops and curtains, international road haulage tilt covers, trailer covers, etc. It has a high-quality finish for prestige appearance, is light in weight, weatherproof, and flame resistant (BSS.3120). It has good resistance to exposure to ultra violet light and its non-toxic qualities ensure its suitability for covering foodstuffs.

Topspan TIR is available in 100 1120yd rolls 48in. and 60in. wide in five shades, each in Patent and PY grains, and in three shades in leatherlike Cape grain, 60in. wide.

Topspan Two is lower in price and lighter in weight; it provides a tough material for all-purpose protective sheeting, for instance, lorry and trailer covers. It is available in five shades each in Patent and PY grains, in 100 /120yd rolls, 60in. wide.

Both qualities stay light in bad weather as their component materials repel water. They remain supple at very low temperatures, resist mould, are rot-proof and unaffected by most chemicals. Their good "handle" makes them easy to weld or sew.

Grease gun

A cartridge-only grease gun, which provides a continuous supply of grease to the high pressure head, is being marketed by Walkers (Century Oils). It is designed to accommodate British Standard grease cartridges.

The gun is of the side-lever type and develops a pressure of more than 6,000 psi. which is powerful enough to free blocked nipples or supply sufficient lubricant through difficult runs of narrow-bore feed pipe. An exhausted cartridge can be removed, a new one loaded and the gun made ready for use in 30sec.

The result of more than 14 months of joint development work by the special products division of Century Oils and Tecalemit (Engineering) Ltd. of Plymouth, the gun will be available through the Century Oils distributor network. A range of 10 different greases is available in the Century Gold Star cartridges which are used with the gun. These include lithiumand calcium-based greases, Lacerta CL 2X water absorbent grease and a lithium grease containing molybdenum disulphide.

Lubricating oils

New lubricating oils for all types of vehicles, with petrol or diesel engines, have been announced by Walkers (Century Oils). The company is introducing its automotive crankcase oils under the new Centlube ranges this year.

The oils have been tested in the UK, Spain, Germany and the US; Century Oils claim that they are in advance of UK engine requirements.

ational characteristics of the oils should be particularly useful.to operators of mixed vehicle fleets The range includes four specifications.

Centlube HD is suitable for both medium diesel and petrol engines, meets DEF 2101D, DEF 2101C (Supp. one) and MIL-L 2104A (Supp. one) requirements. Centlube Supreme, suitable for both large diesel and heavy duty petrol engines, surpasses MIL-L-2104B requirements and is also approved to Ford 1004A standards. The multigrade in the range is Ford M20. 101B approved.

Of the last two specifications Centlube Special SAE10 and SAE30, the SAE10 is suitable for hydraulic mechanisms and low temperature crankcase oil_ Although there are basically four ranges, the ultimate multi use oil is the Centlube 'V Special.

It is said to operate as efficiently in a four-stroke lawn mower as it does in a high-rated diesel engine. During pre-announcement testing Walkers found that most petrol engines, regardless of capacity, were running up to 6,000 miles and more without an oil change and the oil change period for diesel engines was always in excess of manufac turers' recommendations. In all the tests the oil was found to contribute to the elimination of wear, sludge and corrosion in both petrol and diesel engines.

2101D; DEF 2101C (Supplement one) and Ford M2C101B., 1004 requirements.

A rapid reference, fault diagnosis card for fuel injection equipment has been published by CAV.

A pocket-sized, fold-over card, publication number SC1 it has been designed to provide diesel engineers and fitters with an easy-to-check list of five common symptoms ranging from incorrect idling and maximum speeds to difficult starting together with their cause and the check which should be effected, It is printed in three colours and produced on a high gloss card to minimize the effects of grease, dirt and fuel oil.
