Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A full diagnosis system for vans and cars that is being introduced by all Volkswagen dealers in Britain should mean not only lower-cost servicing for VW users but also that there will be less chance of a vehicle leaving a garage without faults being brought to light. The VW Diagnosis and Maintenance System uses electronic and mechanical test equipment specially designed by Bosch and buyers of VW vehicles will get vouchers entitling them to five free checks under the scheme. The first will be at 600 miles and the remainder at 6.000-mile intervals. Subsequent checks and those for users of old vehicles will cost between E1 8s and Cl 14s.

With the system in operation, oil changes, valve-clearance adjustments and filter cleaning will continue to be done as a matter of course at services but all other maintenance will be determined by the mileage, model type and information shown up on the diagnosis. More than 50 checks take less than an hour to complete and these are said to cover everything necessary to ensure complete road-worthiness—from wheel alignment to ignition timing.
