• A new cab will be featured by Fodens Ltd. at the Scottish Show next month. A feature of the design is twin forward-sloping windscreens, the unit being essentially a full-width version of the half-cab introduced by Fodens last year.
Many of the components in the new all-steel cab are as used on the half-cab design, including the driver's door, front panels and so on. An important consideration taken into account at the design stage has been the need to provide for straightforward servicing, particularly in overseas markets and with relatively simple equipment. As a result curves have been kept to a minimum.
The interior of the cab is fully lined and insulated against heat and noise and with a full 8ft interior width the cab is spacious. Access to electrical components, the instrument panel and many auxiliaries is by lifting up a hinged front panel. The instrument cowl is mounted on the dash in front of the driver and a Chapman Superide suspension seat is standard. A fixed seat is provided for a passenger.
Cab mountings are the same as on the half cab and the curved all-steel cab used by Fodens. A pair of coiled springs surrounding telescopic dampers at the rear cut out "back slap" and sideways location is provided for by a tie-bar. There are two rubber /steel mountings at the front.
The new cab will be shown on a Foden 32 tons gross tractive unit at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall, the mechanical specification of this vehicle including a Leyland 200 bhp engine and Foden 12-speed gearbox. Other exhibits will be a 24-ton eight-wheeler with half cab, Gardner 6LX engine and 12-speed gearbox
